There are a number of commercial products you can use for arthritis, such as Pernaease Powder & Joint Guard.
One of our 3 dogs has problems with his back legs. What we do with him (& the other two, both as a preventative and for control of other health problems) is:
- Gentle, low impact exercise.
- Healthy, low fat diet, to try & keep his weight down (he tends to be portly)
- Omega 369 Oil
- Evening Primrose Oil
- Fish Supplement
Diet
A basic BARF diet consisting of Bone And Raw Food. It can be a commercially made product that has all the components ready made for you, or your own mixture of raw meat, pulped or cooked vegies & fruit, supplements such as kelp, small amounts of garlic, egg (incl the shell), yoghurt & raw meaty bones such as chicken wings or necks or brisket.
We tend to stick to Roo mince for our meat source as it is very lean & high in antioxidants & low allergenic (we also have a dog with allergies).
Raw meaty bones are given as a meal. So our dogs get their wings or necks in the morning and their main meal with the Roo mince (or other meat) & vegies/fruit etc in the evening. For greater weight loss, the meals can be swapped around.
Omega 3&6&9 Oil and Evening Primrose Oil
We have found Omega 3 , 6 , and 9 helpful not just in treating arthritis, but also in allergies. It contains anti oxidants & the three oils together allow for better absorption. The Evening Primrose Oil treats our dog with allergies & hives, but has the added advantage when coupled with Omega 369 Oil, boosts the immune system & gives a beautiful coat.
An alternative is Fish Oil tablets or regular sardines.
Fish Supplement
The Fish Supplement we use is from crushed dehydrated fish. It is one of our products, from a deep sea fishing company in Qld.
I have been surprised at the effectiveness of just a teaspoon in the dogs’ evening meal. At times, when I have forgotten to put it in the dog’s meal for a few days, his mobility is noticeably affected.
