The Return of Barney’s Real Dad
(from Angus’s Perspective)
Things have been a little exciting around here lately. There are names being talked about a lot. My really, really, big, big brother Matchew..er…Maphew….umm…Matt, & his all time mate Nicole have been away for a very, very long time.
But Mum has been cleaning the spare room a LOT & has pulled out these lovely soft pillows & things that smell like ..er..Matt & Nicole & put them on the bed. That got us all excited and we had a good long snuffle…until Mum shooed us ‘out, out, out, you naughty boys’. (she does that a LOT!!!….. just between you & me, it annoys me sometimes, but I can’t let Mum know, because she just teases me about it).
Mum & Dad are not really Barney’s Mum & Dad. Barney is their gran-pup. Matt & Nicole went a long, long way away ages ago, so Barney came to stay with us. But that was OK. Barney has come to visit heaps of times before & he & Doughal were litter-mates, so everyone is connected anyway. Things just got LOUDER. And BUSIER. And more fun at playtime.
And harder for walks (so Dad says). I must admit there have been a few times we’ve all been very, shall we say, enthusiastic, at walk times and Dad has ended up skating along the ground on his backside. We like to think we’d make good sled dogs. Dad just says a lot of things under his breath like..@$#%@!…..sometimes not under his breath. Poor Barney doesn’t understand quite as much as Doughal & me…we’ve been trained…sort of….we ARE beagles you know. Walkies is fun with THREE beagles. We can chat to each other loudly, have races, yell at passers by (who don’t often stop- I don’t know why), run round & round Dad’s legs with our leads, scent rabbits..yip, yip, yip..sorry, got distracted.
So, today Mum & Dad are even more excited. And busy. Both are doing their normal jobs, sometimes in the room called the ‘office’, other times doing the other ‘work’ stuff they normally do. But in between there is something else.
A little extra cleaning. Cooking. Tidying. Checking the window………. Wonder what’s going on.
It’s getting close to “D.I.N.N.E.R” time. (Mum doesn’t know Doughal can spell). Mum’s on the phone. Dad rushes towards the front door. We all get excited. We can hear a car. WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
‘Get off the phone, They’re here,” Dad calls excitedly. WHO! WHO! WHO!
Oh! Oh! Oh! It’s Matt & Nicole. WOOF! WOOF! sniff WOOF! snuffle WOOF! get out of the way WOOF!slurp sniiiifff wag wag YIP YIP shove YIP sniff WHOOPEEE!! Look who’s here sniff sniff WOOF! run wag wag wag waddle wag sniff sniff slurp I’m exhausted.
They’re back. Sitting here on the lounge behind Matt’s head, with Doughal beside him trying to sniff him and Barney desperately trying to climb in his lap. Bliss. Mum & Dad sitting talking to Nicole, having “cuppas”. Hmmm, they smell gooood. Like before with a little extra thrown in. They must have gone to lots of different places to smell this good. Matthew’s getting a bit annoyed with our sniffing & slurping, I don’t know why. Mum did warn him about opening his mouth while I was staring at him, I do so love to kiss. And he smells so…what?……DINNER!
