September 19th is International Puppy Farm Awareness Day. It is sad to think that we have a need for such a day. Companion animals are completely at our mercy and even when we may not deserve it, are totally devoted to us. We have a duty to care for them with dignity and respect. Puppy farms do not do this. Nor do pet shops that sell live animals. We have plenty of opportunity to obtain our animals from other reputable sources. There are plenty of breeders who are happy to have you visit their premises, meet the breeding animals, and more often than not, they will want to check you out to make sure their animals are going to a good home. Shelters are a perfect solution. There are so many animals who are needing a good home who make wonderful, loving pets. There is such a need for homes for these animals, as they are living on borrowed time. Many families have found valued additional members at shelters.
