We all love the idea of that cute and cuddly little bundle popping out of a box as a surprise for someone we love. Or we simply fall for those adoring eyes as we pass the shop while we are Christmas shopping and buy on impulse. Before buying a pet, it is always best to stop and think about whether we, or our loved ones, are prepared for such a surprise.
If you decide that buying a pet is not the way to go and would still like to help a rescue animal, you can donate in your name, or that of someone else as a gift, to your favourite rescue group or to RSPCA Guardian Angel
If you are buying an animal for yourself or someone you know who is prepared for it, here are some tips.
*Always check your local RSPCA or local reputable shelter/rescue group first. They have a variety of animals waiting for a good home.
*If you want a particular breed, RSPCA has a 10 point checklist that helps you make sure you are purchasing from a good breeder and not a puppy factory.

*NEVER buy from a pet shop or markets. You are almost GUARANTEED to be buying from a puppy factory. If you don’t know what this is, visit Oscars Law
When buying your pet, remember to include the extras, such as food, bowls (water and food), bedding, crates or cages if applicable and toys. Know what special needs your pet has, including training, but most of all, get to know each other and enjoy each others’ company.
